EndNote 20 (Desktop/Client Versions)

EndNote enables you to move seamlessly through your research process with flexible tools, organizing and sharing your research, creating your bibliography and writing your paper.

Adding References: Three Methods

Adding references can seem complicated, but it's actually easy. There are several ways to add references to your EndNote Library:

  1. Sync with EndNote Web: If you already have created an EndNote Web account, simply click the Sync with EndNote Web icon. It's the blue icon in the middle of the action bar at the top. All references will be copied to your client library.
  2. Import text files using a filter (Usually RIS format). The box at the bottom describes this process.
  3. Manually create citations within EndNote for resources that don't typically generate citations. See the box below for instructions.

Adding Citations Manually

For manually creating citations, select "References" from the menu. Click "New Reference", and then simply add the data describing the resource. The video below provides a tutorial of the process.

Importing Text Files into EndNote

The most common way to import citations into the client is to save those citations from the catalog or database (EBSCO, JSTOR, etc.) into an RIS text format and them directly import them into EndNote. The steps include:

  1. Perform your search in selected database.
  2. Mark your citations.
  3. Export citations into a file.
  4. Import them via EndNote filter (if necessary).

Citations will then be assigned to your citation library. Below is a tutorial of this process.
