Microsoft Word has a built-in feature to detect headings within a document and then format them within a page listing their corresponding location throughout the entire document.  This table of contents feature is located in the References tab of the ribbon at the top of the page.  

The following tutorial demonstrates how to easily create a table of contents based on a preexisting document using the H1 (Header 1) option.
