Beyond Learning Styles: Understanding the ‘How’ vs. the ‘Why’ Learner - February 4th, 2:00-2:30 PM PM and February 5, 12:00-12:30 PM

Location: Webex -  https://mu.webex.com/meet/MClifford

We will explore the two approaches to learning—‘How’ learners who focus on process, steps, and practical application, and ‘Why’ learners who are driven by purpose, concepts, and big-picture thinking. Understanding these preferences can significantly enhance instructional design, teaching methods, and learner engagement.  Through discussions, activities, and real-world examples, participants will discover strategies to identify and support both types of learners in various educational or workplace settings. By the end of the session, you’ll leave with actionable techniques to create balanced learning experiences that motivate and empower all learners—whether they need the “how-to” or the “why it matters.” Register here.

Designing AI-Resistant Assignments and Rubrics – Thursday, Feb 6th, 10:00-11:00 AM

Location: Webex: https://mu.webex.com/meet/mkheiry

Banishing the use of AI in your courses doesn’t prepare your students for the future they face once in the workplace. How can we design assignments to embrace the use of AI and, at the same time, mitigate cheating? In this workshop, learn tips for designing an assignment and rubric that promotes authentic student work, making it more difficult for students to use generative AI to cheat. We'll explore strategies for assessing critical thinking, process engagement, and original contributions, ensuring that your assignments encourage deeper learning and creativity. ChatGPT will be used to edit or create a rubric that works well for your assignment and helps maintain academic integrity. Register here.

Humans & AI: Building a CoLearning Ecosystem for the Future - February 11, 10:00-10:30 AM and February 12, 2:00-2:30 PM

Location: Webex - https://mu.webex.com/meet/MClifford

As AI tools continue to shape education, how can instructors and students collaborate with AI to enhance learning rather than compete against it? In this forward-thinking workshop, participants will explore the concept of CoLearning—a shared process where instructors, students, and AI work together to deepen understanding, creativity, and problem-solving. Discover how AI can act as a collaborator, not just a tool, in the learning process. We’ll explore ways to foster critical thinking, ethical use, and shared ownership of knowledge between humans and AI.  Register here.

Program Assessment – Thursday, February 20th, 11:00 AM - 11:45 AM

Location: In-person – Room to be announced

Are you in the process of designing a new program or an assessment plan? This 45-minute session will discuss examples and best practices that can be used to create a sustainable model for consistent course-level assessment, the data from which can be aggregated within a program to drive assessment at the program level. Participants will begin by examining the learning outcomes of their program and then identify strategies to consistently measure mastery of one or more of these outcomes in their individual courses. Register here.
