Research and Regulatory Data Considerations

Some university data related to federally funded research or institutional regulatory committees (such as IRB, IACUC, or biosafety committees) may be subject to public records laws, including the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) or state-level equivalents.

This includes:

• Meeting minutes and records of regulatory committee discussions
• Research compliance documents
• Grant administration materials related to federal awards

Note: Not all research data is publicly disclosable. Personal information, health data, unpublished results, or proprietary research may still be protected under laws such as HIPAA, FERPA, or Exemption 4 of FOIA.
