MUAC Onboarding - Faculty

Daily Expectations

Daily life on the Ancilla campus tends to be rather casual. To maintain an atmosphere of respect and provide some continuity, there are certain expectations of faculty.

Dress

Faculty are expected to maintain a business casual appearance. Business casual includes pants, slacks, dresses, and skirts of a modest length; shirts with a collar. Jeans in good condition are acceptable. Shorts, typically, are not. Generally speaking, you want to be the most professional looking person in the classroom. There are times when less than business casual is appropriate or when professional attire is other than business (e.g., working in the greenhouse or nursing scrubs).

Being On-Campus

Faculty are expected to be on campus for all of their classes and office hours. Classes should start on time and last their allotted time. If you need to miss a class, try to find a substitute to fill in. If a substitute is not available or cannot be found, you may cancel class for the day. Notify students through Canvas and try to have work for them to do on their own.

Faculty do not need to notify anyone when they come on to campus or when they leave.

Office Hours

Office hours provide an opportunity for students to seek help and for faculty to get to know their students better. All faculty are expected to hold a minimum of 10 office hours per week. Those 10 hours are for all of your classes, not per class. You should be present, in your office, during office hours. Your office hours should be in your Outlook calendar marked as Busy so other meetings are not scheduled at that time. Office Hours are to be posted outside your office door and in your syllabus.

Meals

Faculty may eat when and where they would like. Zirkle Commons provides a variety of choices for every meal at a reasonable price. Faculty can pre-purchase meals at a discount by asking to have funds added to their account at the Zirkle register. Once purchased, you will use your school ID when entering Zirkle.

Other on-campus dining options include Emmaus Café and the dining room on the Motherhouse side of the building which offers a la carte options. Faculty are welcome to bring their own food to eat in a lounge or in your office. There is a refrigerator and vending machine in the lounge on the first floor, room 133. The lounge is open to all faculty, staff, and students.
