What is Draft Coach?

TurnItIn offers a draft version of its simillarity software that is available to users are Marian University with Marian email addresses. Draft Coach offers users three types of reports for work submitted through a Microsoft Word Online document where Draft Coach is enabled as an Add-On.

  • Similarity Check

Similarity checks for works available online where the writing is similar or identical to what is found in a user's submission. The database includes billions of web pages: both current and archived content from the Internet, a database of student papers that have been submitted to Turnitin in the past, and a collection of documents, which consists of thousands of periodicals, journals, and publications.

  • Citation Check

The Citations Check is used to help you identify when your citations are missing references or when your references are missing citations. This check focuses on identifying matching pairs of citations and references that you include in your text.

  • Grammar Guide

Grammar Guide searches your draft for any grammatical mistakes using US-English grammar rules. Any potential errors will be highlighted, categorized, and listed with suggestions on how they could be corrected.

For more about understanding the Draft Coach reports, see TurnItIn's resource guide here

How to use Draft Coach

To use TurnItIn's Draft Coach, your document must be opened in Microsoft Word Online. Draft Coach does not work in the Microsoft Word stand-alone computer program.

If you used the Microsoft Word program to create your document, you can easily open the file in Word Online by adding it to your OneDrive. All Marian University users with Marian email addresses have access to both OneDrive and Word Online through the Sharepoint login found here:

 https://marianedu.sharepoint.com/SitePages/Tools.aspx

Add a file (or folder of files) to OneDrive

  1. Click on the nine dots on the top left and select OneDrive from the menu:
  2. Select the + Add New option and select either a folder of files or a single file to add to OneDrive. (Remember: while you can load any kinds of files to OneDrive, you can only use Draft Coach with Word files).

Enable DraftCoach within Microsoft Word Online

(You should only have to do this once)

  1. Open a Word Document from your OneDrive.
  2. Click on the red Add-ins box:

  3. Search for Draft Coach and add it from the list:
  4. When you first add Draft Coach, you will need to authenticate it using your Marian email address. This should be done automatically since you are already logged into your Marian ID but, if you see a blank window that doesn't log you in automatically, look for a message to allow a popup.

Use Draft Coach once it has been added

  1. Click on Turnitin on the top navigation bar.
  2. Click on Draft Coach
  3. Select one of the three Draft Coach reports to run. You can run the citations check and the grammar guide as many times as you wish. You can run the Similarity Check three times per Word Online document.
  4. Use the Navigation at the top (Details, Similarity, Citations, Grammar) to switch between reports as needed.
