Guidelines for faculty use of the Respondus programs including: LockDown Browser, Monitor, and Respondus 4.0.

What is Respondus 4.0?

Respondus 4.0 is a program that allows you to take a formatted Word document and get a file that can be uploaded to create a Canvas quiz. There are three parts to this process.

  1. Create a document that is formatted so Respondus 4.0 can read it
  2. Install Respondus 4.0 (if not installed)
  3. Use Respondus 4.0 to create a QTI file that can be uploaded to Canvas
  4. Upload that file to Canvas.

Step 1

Create a formatted document with the questions:

The key part of this process is ensuring that questions are formatted exactly as Respondus requires. Depending on the type of question, the formatting will also be different.

Here is the guide from Respondus that shows how to format each question type (see Appendix. pages 41-51).

Step 2

Install Respondus 4.0

Our institution has obtained a campus-wide license for Respondus 4.0. Respondus 4.0 is a powerful tool for creating and managing exams that can be published directly to our LMS or printed for paper-based exams. Exams can be created offline using a familiar Windows environment.

Our license also permits you to install a copy of Respondus 4.0 on a personal computer. However, you are not permitted to provide the Respondus 4.0 software or the password information to anyone who is not affiliated with our institution. Such an action is a violation of our licensing agreement with Respondus and is also illegal.

You can use Respondus on your machine as long as it meets the following minimum requirements:

  • Windows 10 or 11
  • 32 MB RAM
  • 10 MB hard drive space
  • 1024x768 or 1280x720 Monitor resolution

You can obtain a copy of the Respondus 4.0 software by downloading it from here

The download is named “Respondus4Campus.exe”. Locate the file on your hard drive and double-click it to start the Respondus 4.0 installation program. We recommend that you accept the default settings for where the program is installed.

During the installation process, you will be asked to enter the activation details. The information must be entered EXACTLY as follows:
