Digitization and Digital Resources

This guide will serve as an introduction to the concepts and terminology associated with digitization and the basic file formats associated with the process.

Resources for Digital Editing

If you have access to a computer, you will certainly have access to various editing resources.  Many different types of editors exist for all types of digital files.  The following list, while not exhaustive, is a collection of free resources that can be found online to aid in editing image and audio files. So if you don't have access to the highly expensive Adobe Photoshop, then give these options a try.

Audio

  • Audacity: Audacity is a free download that does nearly everything associated with both creating and editing audio files. Aside from being free, it's easy to use and allows for exporting files into MP3 or WAV format with excellent sound quality. 

Images

  • Picnik: This is a fun and free editor that allows one not only make basic editing option, but to add various effects and enhancements to your images. It allows for saving files in most coomon image formats.
  • FotoFlexer: Another free editor, with slightly more options than Picnik; perhaps not as user-friendly.
  • Paint.Net: another alternative to Photoshop, this application performs nearly all the most important functions as the more expensive image editing applications.
