New Full-Time Faculty Resources

A guide to support new full-time faculty as they get oriented to Marian University.

Department Participation

Faculty must regularly attend department meetings, with minutes recorded and retained for at least two academic years.

  • They support department programs through assessment, recruitment, grant-seeking, budget planning, and curriculum development.
  • Faculty collaborate on program assessment, submitting annual reports and formal program reviews to improve program quality and effectiveness.

Student Engagement: Advising and Recruitment

Faculty are responsible for academic advising, with oversight from the Provost’s Office. They also actively participate in student recruitment efforts, such as welcoming prospective students, writing letters, and making calls.

Scholarship & Professional Development

Faculty are expected to engage in scholarship, which includes research, publishing, consulting, professional service, and knowledge application in public forums. They should belong to professional associations and attend conferences. Institutional support for faculty scholarship is available through the Professional Development budget and internal funding from schools/colleges. Scholarship is categorized into four areas:

  • Advancement
  • Integration
  • Application
  • Transformation of knowledge

University & Community Service

Faculty are required to engage in university service, including committee participation, governance, student advising, and support for university events. Attendance at strategic planning meetings, professional development sessions, and major academic events (e.g., convocation, graduation) is mandatory. Community engagement is encouraged through service-learning, local initiatives, and participation in campus and off-campus cultural, athletic, and intellectual activities.
