Over the summer, the HHMI ie3 MLCs hosted a learning community for faculty and staff who were interested in implementing alternative grading into their classroom. Come hear from a panel of participants about how their implementations are going this semester, tips and tricks, and lessons learned so far. The two sessions are intended to be repeated sessions for those who cannot make the times, but different faculty will be present on the panel according to their schedules.

Ever leave a department meeting or a class with more of a mess to untangle than when you started? We have, too! This two-part workshop series is designed to help you build the skills to turn challenging conversations into productive, respectful dialogues—and completion of both sessions will earn a CTL certificate that can be added as a professional development badge in the Faculty Success system.
This summer, we used a CTL grant for coaching on how to dialogue with authentic intention and better tools. We learned so much that can help engage our students as well as our peers and supervisors, and now we want to share and refine these skills with the broader Marian community.
Across the two workshop sessions, we’ll learn key principles, reflect individually and in small groups, and practice reframing potentially tricky conversations into dialogues marked by mutuality and dignity. And yes, we’ll eat together! Free lunch will be provided for the first 25 registrations. For more information or to share dietary needs, please email kguidero@marian.edu or emclelland@marian.edu. Build presence, authenticity, and transformational teaching practices with this semester’s pick, The Present Professor. The book argues that when instructors cultivate authentic presence and mindfulness, they create psychologically safe, inclusive classrooms that reduce stress and unlock deeper learning—practical ideas you can apply right away.
How it works
We’ll open with a brief, 2-minute optional “mindful arrival” to help everyone settle in, such as a simple breathing practice or use the time for quiet reflection.

Not all students arrive with the same foundation, but smart tools can help level the playing field. From diagnostic feedback to personalized content scaffolding, we’ll explore how technology can serve as a quiet tutor—identifying needs early and offering targeted support without stigma.
