Yuja

Yuja is a video capture software and a video Content Management System that integrates directly in Canvas

Sharing a Yuja video within Canvas

To share a Yuja video within Canvas there are three options:

  • Embed the video within a page or module
    • This method is a little easier and it puts the content directly onto the page. This also makes it easier for the viewer to get started and keeps the video in the context of the content posted within Canvas.
  • Post the link to the video onto a page or module
    • This method is a little more difficult but can make the content appear more seamless since it can be linked to as a hyperlink.
  • Target a Yuja Course Channel
    • This method uses the Canvas roster to verify who should see the videos shared on a Canvas course. It gives the student a view of the videos as though they are a playlist. It is not usually recommended since it separates the video from the context of the content when a video is displayed on a page as a link or embed.

Embed the video within a page or module

This is the easiest way to get a Yuja video into a Canvas course, but it is only recommended for a few videos at a time. For example, having more than five videos on a page can be distracting and/or confusing for users looking for a particular video. If you have more than five videos, you might want to try linking the video instead (see instructions below).

To embed on a page:

  1. Go to the page you want to embed the video on.
  2. Click Edit in the rich text field (the main box), put your cursor where you want the video to appear on the page).
  3. Click the Yuja symbol in the tool line:
  4. Select your video using the Yuja Media Chooser. You can select multiple videos to import at the same time. If you do not see your video in the list, you can search for it in the top Search box:

or you can use the arrow at the bottom to load more of your videos.
  5. Select Insert Content when you are finished selecting your videos.
  6. Click Save on the page when you are done editing your page.

To embed in a module:

  1. Click the + button in the module that you want to add your Yuja video into.
  2. Under the Add dropdown menu at the top, select External Tool.
  3. Choose Yuja Media from the list (it will be at the bottom).
  4. Select your video using the Yuja Media Chooser. You can only select one video to import at a time. If you do not see your video in the list, you can search for it in the top Search box:

or you can use the arrow at the bottom to load more of your videos.
  5. On this screen, you can change the name that the link goes under by changing the Page Name text. When you are ready to add it, select Add Item:

Post the link to the video onto a Page or Module

For this, you will need to get the link from your Yuja Media Library and then insert it into a page or module.

Get the link:

  1. Go to marian.yuja.com
  2. Log in if necessary
  3. Go to the video that you want to share
  4. Hover over it with your mouse
  5. Click on More:
  6. Click on Links (on the left side navigation column to see the following menu:
  7. You want to copy the Direct Link that is shown at the top. If you click the copy icon on the right, it will put the link into your clipboard so that you can paste it in the next section. You can also click on the Custom Direct Link to make the text that comes after the "marian.yuja.com/v/" more user-friendly (although if you are putting it as a hyperlink (which is recommended) then it isn't as important).

Add the link to a page:

  1. Go to the page that you want to add the link to
  2. Click Edit
  3. Within the rich text editor box, put your cursor where you want the link to appear. If hyperlinking the link, select the word or words that you want to make "clickable"
  4. Click on Insert
  5. Hover over Link
  6. Click on External Link
  7. Paste the link from your clipboard
  8. Click Done
  9. Save the page when you are finished

Add the link to a module:

  1. Click the + button in the module that you want to add your Yuja video into
  2. Under the Add dropdown menu at the top, select External URL
  3. Paste in the link to the URL: field
  4. Give the link a title in the Page Name field
  5. Click on Add Item when finished

Share a Yuja Video on a Canvas page as a link (Video Walkthrough)

Target a Yuja Course Channel

While recording new Yuja videos, instructors can choose where to save the videos in their Yuja library and they can also target Yuja channels. Instructors need to click on the Canvas course's Yuja link, and the channel will be created automatically. Students can access Yuja channels by clicking on the Yuja link in the Canvas course. Targeting channels also allows instructors to do a live webcast of their lecture as well.

To target a channel while recording:

  1. Open the Yuja Software Capture program.
  2. Choose your options for the video capture on the left. If you want to do a Live broadcast, you must turn the Live setting from Off to On:
  3. Put a title in for the recording.
  4. Click the Share button to open the channel selector:
  5. You can see channels available to you in the Available Channels section, you can use the Filter box to search for specific channels:

Please Note: If your channel does not appear in this list, you will need to go to your Course page in Canvas and click on Yuja within it. This "registers" the course in Yuja. Restart Yuja and go through the directions again.

  6. Click the plus button next to the channel that you want to target (you can choose multiple if you would like). That moves the channel down into the Selected Channels box:
  7. Click on Save to target that channel. Click on Clear to start over. Click on Cancel to exit out without making any changes.
  8. Start and end your recording as you need to.
  9. After you click the Stop button, you will get the following prompt:
  10. Clicking Save will store it in your Media library. Clicking Post Now will post it into the channel for immediate viewing by enrolled students AND store it in your media library. Clicking Delete will remove the file from your Yuja media library and channel.

Organizing your Yuja Channel

You can create folders (called sub-channels) within your Yuja Channel.

Some notes about sub-channels:

  • You can view what the channel looks like for students by clicking the View Channel option (or by selecting the four boxes in the top right):
  • Sub-channel names must start with the name of the channel. This means it can be difficult for users to see the full names of the folder they are trying to find. To make this a little easier, switch to the View Channel option (see previous bullet point), and then select the monitor icon on the top right:
