New Faculty Orientation

New, full-time faculty receive a New Faculty Orientation every August. This guide covers important information about this orientation so faculty feel informed and supported.

I am a staff member or part-time instructor.  May I attend the orientation?

We never turn away those who want to learn more. However, we do request that you please review the agenda and choose sessions that are most appropriate for your needs. Many of the sessions are geared toward full-time faculty and may not align with your needs. Please reach out to Mona Kheiry to let her know you plan on attending (mkheiry@marian.edu).

I may not be able to attend all the sessions during the intensive week.  Is that OK?

The Office of the Provost requests that New Faculty Orientation be completed by all new faculty.  However, we understand that life happens.  Especially if you're moving from another state (or another country) or other important conflicts have surfaced. Please reach out to Mona Kheiry (mkheiry@marian.edu) to let her know what's going on. Please note that if you are eligible to receive the $500 stipend, any missed days or half-days will result in a reduction of the stipend.

I was a Marian University adjunct instructor or staff member.  Do I still need to attend the orientation?

Being a full time faculty member at Marian University has a lot of nuances to it, including different expectations and responsibilities. The orientation is expected to be completed by all new faculty, regardless of their previous affiliations with the university. Please reach out to your dean if you have questions about this policy.

Is there a virtual option for the intensive week?

There is a virtual option, but it is reserved for those who are considered online/remote faculty who reside in other states or for emergency purposes only. The expectation is that faculty attend the intensive week in person.

Is there a virtual option for the Thursday session during the semesters?

There is a virtual option for the Thursday sessions, but it is reserved for those at the Plymouth campus and online faculty. If you have a conflict that prevents you from attending a Thursday session, please reach out to one of the facilitators to let them know.

What should I wear to the intensive week prior to the start of the semester?

Business casual is completely appropriate and we also have some faculty who have dressed casually. One of the days includes a Meet and Greet, which is often attended by Marian University leadership, such as deans, the provost, the chancellor, and sometimes even the president.  For this reason, many faculty dress more professionally on this day.

Will lunch be served during the intensive week?

Yes!  We provide lunch during the intensive week.  We will also have coffee in the morning. We take pride in serving tasty meals that accommodate your needs/preferences.

What should I do to prepare for the intensive week?

Great question!  Please look through this entire guide, including the "Getting Started" checklist. If you are new to Canvas, please sign up for any Canvas training sessions, as we will be using Canvas during the orientation. If you know what courses you'll be teaching, it's also helpful to have a syllabus with you (if one exists). Also, Mona sent out a survey for all new faculty to complete to help the NFO team prepare.  Please fill out the survey.  There is also a full-time faculty guide that you may find helpful to better understand the expectations and responsibilities of faculty.

What about parking on campus?

Don't worry about parking tags during the intensive week, as campus police don't start ticketing until the semester starts. Once you are on campus, you will receive instructions on how to obtain your parking tag from campus police.

Where is the New Faculty Orientation being held?

Mona will send (or already sent) an email with the room location of the New Faculty Orientation during the intensive week.  The location will also eventually be posted along with the agenda. Here is a campus map to assist you in getting familiar with the layout of campus. The meeting room for the Thursday sessions throughout the academic year will be communicated with you closer to the start of the semester.

If I'm eligible for the stipend, when and how will I be paid the stipend?

After reviewing attendance records and contract dates, Mona processes the stipends. This occurs the week following the intensive week. The stipend form she fills out is sent to her manager to be signed.  This is then emailed back to her and she forwards it to payroll in the HR office.  The HR office pays the stipends on the next payroll date. If you opted for your regular pay from the university to be paid via direct deposit, the stipend is deposited into your account along with your regular pay. The stipend is paid using the payment method you indicated for your regular pay from the university. If you have questions about a payment date or how you will receive the payment beyond what is here in this FAQ, please reach out to the HR office - hr@marian.edu
