Understanding the Marian University Black Student Experience

One of the objective and key results (OKRs) for 2023-2024 in Student Success and Engagement is to raise the retention rates of First-Time Full-Time (FTFT) Black students. Therefore, it is imperative that staff and faculty understand the Black student experience at Marian. This assessment project, conducted by Angelica Smith (Unity Center) and Kalyn Rudow (21st Century Scholars), will expand on the results of the National Survey of Student Engagement and Campus Climate Surveys by conducting focus groups with Black students to learn more about their experience on campus.

Utilizing Peer Mentors in Holistic Health – Mind, Body, and Spirit (HWB-110)

HWB-110 is a key part of Marian’s Transformational Journey Program. The purpose of this project, conducted by  Matt Walsh (Social Work) and Holly Gastineau-Grimes (History and Global Studies), is to incorporate peer mentors into HWB-110 to enhance the student learning outcomes in the course and provide an opportunity for sophomore, junior, and senior year students to gain leadership skills and teaching strategies from both faculty and staff. Surveys, focus groups, and rubric scores will be used to examine student learning.
